For every card transaction the eligible card processor or merchant acquirer needs to pay a fee to the issuing bank (the one providing the card to the consumer). This interbank fee - called 'interchange fee' - is most often a percentage of the purchase amount.
This interchange fee is then charged onto (online) merchants like you - including a mark-up. Interchange fees take a fair share in the costs you bare as a merchant.
Now these interchange rates are forced down - also for domestic card payments - you could definitely benefit from lower rates.

The interchange fees for MasterCard and Visa card payments in - for example the UK, Netherlands, Belgium and Germany - continue to drop. MasterCard and Visa are forced to achieve an average interchange rate of 0.30% on consumer cards in Europe.
During the last year MasterCard lowered their ecommerce interchange rates in the Netherlands with almost 40%! For the upcoming years more of these costs reductions have been announced.
Also Visa is to cap its interchange fees.

Besides capping interchange fees, there is another important development driving credit card fees down: the increase in competition in the European card processing market.
There are more and more card processors aiming to grab a piece of the European market or expanding their acquiring operations across the region. Due to economies of scale these card processors are able to lower their costs and card fees. In the recent past there were only a couple of merchant acquirers per country, now you are able to choose from over 20 acquirers licensed to process your MasterCard and Visa payments.
